Excer-Dice

Supplies:

  • Two large Styrofoam blocks
  • paper
  • markers
  • glue or tape

Directions:

  1. Use the two Styrofoam blocks to create two dice.
  2. Cut paper to fit the sides of the Styrofoam blocks. Print various ways to move on six of the pieces of paper and let the children draw pictures to depict the actions below the words. For example: run, walk, crawl, hop, spider-walk (on hands and feet), and tiptoe. Glue or tape these to six sides of one die.
  3. Cover the second die with blank paper. On each side, print the number one, two, or three so that you have two of each number on the die.
  4. Race around a designated area as directed by the way the dice land. For example, if the movement die lands with "hop" on top and the number die lands with "three" on top, the children should race around the designated area three times while hopping.
  5. The goal of the game is not winning the race, but rather to follow the directions indicated on the dice. Encourage the children to cooperate and help each other.
Let each child take a turn rolling the dice. Continue play until the children lose interest or become tired.
Tip: In place of one of the movements on the movement die, print the word "rest" and draw a picture of a child lying down. If the ExerDice lands with the word"rest" on top, all should lie down and rest while they count to the number indicated on the number die.

Fruit Kebabs

Ingredients:

  • 1 apple
  • 1 banana
  • 1/3 c. red seedless grapes
  • 1/3 c. green seedless grapes
  • 2/3 cup pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup nonfat yogurt
  • ¼ c. dried coconut, shredded

Utensils:

  • knife (you'll need help from your adult assistant)
  • 2 wooden skewer sticks
  • large plate

Directions:

  1. Prepare the fruit by washing the grapes, washing the apples and cutting them into small squares, peeling the bananas and cutting them into chunks, and cutting the pineapple into chunks, if it's fresh. Put the fruit onto a large plate.
  2. Spread coconut onto another large plate.
  3. Slide pieces of fruit onto the skewer and design your own kabob by putting as much or as little of whatever fruit you want! Do this until the stick is almost covered from end to end.
  4. Hold your kabob at the ends and roll it in the yogurt, so the fruit gets covered. Then roll it in the coconut.
  5. Repeat these steps with another skewer.

Paper Plate Faces

Supplies:
Paper plate
Yarn (for hair)
Colored paper
Scissors
Glue
Crayons
Any materials you want to make facial features!

Directions:
Cut out pieces of colored paper to make shapes for different facial features. You could also cut out pictures from magazines of eyes, mouths, noses... etc.
Glue them onto the plate
That's basically it!
Color in any features you want to include on your face.

I tried to sit down with Parker before we started and ask him what was on his face and tell him what each feature did. (ie: you use your nose to smell...) He thought this was pretty funny. I once knew a child who didn't know that he had holes in his nose. Teaching moment? I think so!

Have fun and be creative and see what kind of faces you can come up with!

Body Outlines

Supplies Needed:
Long piece of butcher paper
Marker
Crayons

Directions:
Lay the butcher paper out on a flat surface. Have your child lay down and remind them to be very still. Trace their body with the marker and then show them how big they are! Color in hair, eyes, nose, mouths and any other parts of the body you want to include! Take time to tell them about where their heart is and how many fingers and toes they have, etc.
Parker had a BLAST doing this activity! I now have the "shadow" hanging above his bed.

We told him we were going to trace his body to make a shadow like in Peter Pan. He was so excited he could hardly contain himself. He was so eager to lay down and have me trace his little body. After we were done he wanted to fly- duh. (Like Peter Pan...) We had to explain to him that Tinker Bell was no where around and that we didn't have any fairy dust. :-)

So excited!

Showing us his muscles!

Trying to fly...

Here's our finished "shadow"! It looks just like him! (Sort of...)
