Visit your local fire station, and dont forget a sweet treat- they love that kind of stuff! Oh! And dont forget the camera!

Flame Paints with Marbles

Supplies:

Yellow and red tempera paint in small cups or bowls

Marbles

Box lid

Manila paper or folders

Directions:

Let children lay a piece of Manila paper in the box lid. Spoon out one to three small blobs of paint on the paper and place one or more marbles in the lid. We didn't have any paint so we used catchup and mustard! By tilting the lid slightly the marbles will roll around through the paint and make "flame" designs. Add more spoonfuls of paint if desired to increase the color blending.

Basic 72 Hour Kit

The government's Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) has lists of items they suggest all residents pack into an emergency bag. Begin with those items. The quantities must last for at least 3 days, per person. They are:

• Food: 3 days of non-perishable food items per person
• Water: One gallon of water per person, per day for drinking and sanitation purposes
• Dust masks and poncho
• Flashlight and batteries: While one flashlight is good, one per person is best. Use small penlights with LED bulbs for longest lasting light
• Whistle: Every person in your family should have a whistle to help signal location, distress or for help. Putting the whistle on a lanyard helps keep track of it
• Sanitation-Moist towelettes, hand purifying gel, paper towels, trash bags in several sizes and plastic ties
• Blankets or emergency "space" blankets for warmth
• A heavy duty backpack or duffel bag with a shoulder strap to carry kit items

Fire Drills

Fire Drill
Even though you are expected to do fire drills on a regular basis, have your children do a fire drill during the theme.

Smoke Crawl
Explain to the children that if there is a lot of smoke that they should crawl instead of walk. Have the children practice crawling.

Stop, Drop and Roll
Have the children stop, drop and roll.

I Know My Name, Address and Phone
Work with the older children to memorize their full name, address and phone number. Also, teach children about calling 911 in an emergency.
